Troutman Funeral Home History
Troutman Funeral Home has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. Originally built in 1912 by local businessman Henry Brown, the home was a place for his family to grow and thrive. His son, Mason, later married Annie, a young woman from Troutman, and together they built a life in Mooresville and High Point.
After Mason’s passing in 1956, Annie returned to Troutman and transformed the family home into a welcoming boarding house. For decades, it became a cherished place where many newlyweds and teachers in town found a sense of home.
In 1989, Annie moved to Missouri to be closer to her daughter and sold the home to Jim and Susan Sappenfield. The Sappenfields lovingly restored the house and established Troutman Funeral Home, ensuring it remained a place centered around family and community. Annie Brown passed away in 1996 at the remarkable age of 104, but her legacy of warmth and hospitality continues.
In December 2018, William and Abbi Troutman of Statesville, NC, purchased Troutman Funeral Home from Jim and Susan Sappenfield, who retired to be closer to their family. William’s father, Joe Troutman—a licensed funeral director since 1961—joined him in running the funeral home. As a sixth-generation member of the original Troutman family of Troutman, NC, Joe carries forward the deep-rooted family heritage that has always defined Troutman Funeral Home.
