William Gaston Morrison, Sr., 89, of Statesville, passed away, Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
Mr. Morrison was born October 3, 1929 in Flat Rock, NC to the late Pauline Horne Morrison and Francis Scarr Morrison, Sr. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Statesville, NC and graduated from Statesville Senior High School, where he was a co-captain of the state championship football team in 1947-1948. After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill he served in the US Army and was a combat veteran in the 2nd Division in the Korean War (1951-1952). In 1954, he married Julia Elizabeth Gibbs, who passed away June 12, 2018.
After his military service, Mr. Morrison was employed by the Westinghouse Corporation and then as a sales representative for Huttig Sash and Door Company of Charlotte. In 1962 he formed Associated Laundry Sales, the commercial distributor for Maytag Corporation in NC and VA with his brother. He enjoyed family and playing golf.
He is survived by four children, William G. “Bill” Morrison, Jr. (Jenny) of Chapel Hill, Sandra M. Davidson (Paul) of Statesville, Pamela M. Harper of Charlotte, Daniel Gibbs Morrison (Jane) of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren and two sisters, Ann M. Carson of Statesville, Frances M. Ashe of Newnan, GA.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Polly M. Jordan, Adelaide M. Shefte, Gloria M. Williams, Elsie M. Cansler and one brother, Francis Scarr Morrison, Jr.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, June 29, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Edward Boyce and grandson-in-law, Rev. Nathanial Perry Goss officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail. The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 10:00-11:00 am before the service at the church. The family will receive friends at 559 Stoneybrook Rd., Statesville, NC following interment.
