Charlton Lindler, Sr. Obituary

Charlton Hugh Lindler, Sr., 97, of Statesville, passed away, Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the Gordon Hospice House. Born May 31, 1922 in Sherrills Ford, NC (Catawba County) and was the son of the late Henry Bright Lindler and Virginia Brinkley Lindler.

He was a graduate of Sherrills Ford High School and for a year worked for Burlington Mills in Statesville. He joined the US Navy on September 30, 1941 and served in the Pacific Theatre on Johnston Island and Pearl Harbor until Japan surrendered. Upon returning home, he found his long-time sweetheart, Arlington Frye, waiting for him. They were married on February 24, 1946. She passed away April 25, 2006.  He attended Elon College and later transferred to Lenior-Rhyne College in 1947. He graduated Cum-Laude in 1949 with a BA in History and has been a loyal supporter of the college through the years. He received his Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling from Appalachian State University.

After graduation from college they moved to Rural Hall in Forsyth County were their two sons, Chuck and Hugh were born. They moved to Statesville in 1954 and he spent 27 years in the Iredell County School System. He was a principal at Wayside School for 10 years and the last 15 years of his career he spent in various Administrative positions in the system. He retired as Assistant Superintendent in 1981. He was a 7th generation Lutheran and a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church since 1954 where he taught Sunday School and served several terms on the church council.

In addition to his two sons, Charles “Chuck” Lindler (Marcia) of Statesville and Charlton Hugh Lindler, Jr. (Betsy) of Newton, he is survived by four grandchildren, Philip Charles Lindler, Charlton Hugh Lindler, III, Mary Anna Lindler, Lillian Lindler McGrew and three great grandchildren, Charleigh Arlington McGrew, Harrison James McGrew and Adeline Denise Lindler. In addition to his wife of 60 years, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Ernie Sheldon officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 9:00-10:30 am in the church Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
