Zoie Lee Spears Deaton, 102, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, went to her heavenly home on December 9, 2014.
Born June 24, 1912, to the late William F. and Hester Spears, Zoie lived her entire life in Iredell County. She graduated from Troutman High School in 1929, winning the Elocution Award. She was employed by Troutman Industries for forty years and later worked at Lowrance Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She was a community correspondent for the Mooresville Tribune for over sixty years. For many years, she was a member of the Troutman Post 401 Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Linwood Homemaker’s Club of Mooresville. She lived a long, courageous and joyful life and was sharp and witty till the end. She will be greatly missed.
Zoie became a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Troutman in 1924. She dearly loved her church and church family, serving as Communion Steward for 48 years. She also served as a children’s Sunday school teacher and as Church Historian.
Mrs. Deaton was preceded in death by her husband, Hal Deaton; her son, Bob Sherrill; her sisters, Mary Sherrill and Alma Cashion; and her brother, Fred "Buck" Spears.
She is survived by her devoted and loving daughter, Billie Cress Brawley (Ray); granddaughter, Becky Brawley Thompson; grandsons, Brad Brawley and Bobby Sherrill (Kimberly); and great-grandchildren, Avery, Katy and Will Thompson and Elizabeth and Jeffrey Brawley. She is also survived by her loving nephew, Dr. Jerry C. Cashion and her former daughter-in-law, Martha S. Johnston.
Many loving relatives and friends abound as Zoie was a true friend to all she met, a loving Christian servant who liked nothing better than to share her bounty and the many delectable dishes that came forth from her kitchen.
Funeral services will take place at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 579 Weathers Creek Road, Troutman, NC, on Sunday, December 14th, with the Rev. Matthew Emory officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 2:00 -3:00 p.m. with services beginning at 3:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the church from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff of Genesis Eldercare for their loving care of Zoie for the past eight years.
