Tony Wayne Harwell

Tony Wayne Harwell, 73, of Statesville, passed away in his home on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Tony was born on March 3, 1953, in Iredell County to the late Ross and Betty Harwell.

He was an avid sportsman and never knew a sport in which he didn’t excel. He loved playing golf until later in life when his health didn’t allow him to. Baseball was his favorite and he always followed it as well as his UCLA Bruins. He always loved his New York Yankees and knew every stat. He loved coaching any sport and did so for many years, especially baseball. 

He spent hours working or playing his banjo while listening to bluegrass music. He loved visiting his family and friends and always had everyone in tears laughing at his stories. He never met a stranger he would not stop and talk with.

Tony leaves behind sons, Jason Harwell (Jennifer) and Josh Harwell (Vicky); daughter, Jessica Owens (Mark); grandchildren, Jaden Harwell, Saylor Harwell, Chloe Owens, Noah Owens and Lilian Owens; brothers, David Harwell (Denise), Ronnie Harwell (Susan) and Mickey Harwell (Renae); nephews, Shannon Harwell, Bryan Harwell and Jeremy Harwell (Melody); and nieces, Michelle Harwell Burch, Amanda Harwell and Taylor Harwell.

A celebration on life service will be held at Troutman Funeral Home on Monday, June 22, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
