Sylvia Whitley

Sylvia Carson Whitley, 83, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Autumn Care.

Sylvia was born in Statesville on August 27, 1941, to the late Erskine Wilbur Carson and Earle Lane Warren Carson Busby.

She received a B.S. degree from Appalachian and a master’s degree from UNC Charlotte. She taught in Cherryville, Reidsville, and Stanley County, and she retired after 30 years of teaching at West Iredell High School.

She was a member of Forest Park Presbyterian Church, where she was an active member of the choir as well as the bell choir. She enjoyed being a homemaker, Soccer Mom, teacher and gardener.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Brian Lafayette Whitley; son, Brian L. “Brett” Whitley, Jr. (Mary); daughter, Elane W. “Laney” Reynolds (Chad); grandchildren, Melissa Pouge, Amber McDaniels, Garret Reynolds, Eli Reynolds, and Keely Ruth Reynolds; six great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Cynthia C. Watts of Cherryville, NC.

A memorial service will be held Thursday December 26, at 3:00 pm, at Forest Park Presbyterian Church, officiated by and Rev. Chad Reynolds and Rev. Scott Jeffreys. The family will visit with friends following the service.
