Sylvia Irene Yurich Shumake

Sylvia Irene Yurich Shumake, 83, of Statesville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at her home.

Sylvia was born on April 11, 1943, in Rockingham County to the late Joseph Yurich and Myrtle Phillips Yurich. She attended Mitchell College, where she earned an associate degree in music and sang in the chorus. Sylvia was a former owner of Kat’s Patch Restaurant in Troutman and spent 30 years raising and showing Yorkshire Terriers. A devoted member of the Baptist faith, she dearly loved God, her family, and her Jerry.

Left to cherish Sylvia’s memory are her husband of 38 years, Jerry Shumake; her daughter, Terri Sloan (Norman); sons, Mark Baynes (Lynn), Jerry Baynes and Derek Baynes (Debbie); sisters, Ann Bryant (Gary) and Debrah Gibson (Neil); twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, April 27, at Iredell Memorial Gardens with Rev. John Parks officiating.

The family would like to give special thanks to Lori, Shauna and Tiffany of Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville NC 28625.
