Sidney Lee Basinger, 85, of 200 Listening Ridge Lane, Cary, died peacefully at home after a brief illness on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Lee was born on June 7, 1941, in Concord to the late Sidney Smith and Annie Belle Basinger. He was a graduate of Concord High School, where he played football for the Spiders. He then attended Lenoir Rhyne College before transferring and graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Following graduation, he was commissioned officer in the Navy, serving on tours to the Mediterranean and Caribbean during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He married the love of his life, Sandra Myers Basinger, on December 26, 1965, and went to work for Union Camp Paper company before purchasing Builtright Chair Company in Statesville, where they raised a family until he sold Builtright and retired in the late 90s. After losing his first wife to cancer in 2005, he married Debra Key Basinger and they moved to Myrtle Beach and enjoyed travel, golf and fishing on the beach. When Debbie passed in December 2024, Lee lived briefly at Portside Assisted Living in Myrtle Beach before moving in with his son Randy and wife Genie in Cary where he enjoyed visits with his family and grandchildren and attended concerts and UNC basketball games and growing a garden before he died.
He is survived by his son, Randall Lee Basinger and wife, Genie, of Cary, and two daughters, Stacy B. Goodman of Mahopac, NY; Bonnie Lee Basinger of Charlotte; and grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Gabrielle Miranda Basinger, Ethan Michael Basinger, Sydney Lee Basinger, Savannah Hope Basinger, Isabella Alexis Hinz, Anika Gabriela Hinz, Alexandra Camilla Hinz, Grace Liberty Goodman, Jesse Justice Goodman and Chloe Belle Goodman.
A Receiving will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 7 at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 am, followed by a burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Following the burial, a reception will be held at Twisted Oak American Bar & Grill in downtown Statesville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Lee’s honor to the charity of your choice.
