Oct. 11, 1928 - Mar. 30, 2015
Roy Eugene "Gene" Waugh left home for heaven on March 30, 2015 with his family by his side.
He was born October 11, 1928 in Iredell County to the late Roy Allison Waugh and Bethy Dagenhart Waugh. He attended Sharon School until it burned down and the students were transferred to other schools. Gene ended up at Scotts where he met his future wife, Aileen Grant, and graduated in 1947. They were married December 10, 1949 and recently celebrated their 65th anniversary.
Paw Paw, as his family affectionately called him, was a lifelong Methodist and served his church in every possible way including Bible School, Methodist Men, mowing the grass and a variety of administrative positions. He was honored with the Laity Award in 2008. He was also a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International.
He worked for Beroth Oil Company (formerly Myers Oil) for more than thirty years but never stopped working. He was a passionate gardener and shared his produce with family, friends and neighbors. He was especially known for his excellent Silver Queen corn. He also enjoyed fishing, baking, cooking for groups and fixing things. He taught his children and grandchildren to love the Lord, to work hard, deal honestly and take care of each other. Last week he told Jennifer he had "lived a happy life with his family".
He is survived by his "first love", Aileen; daughters, Beverly Luke and LaVonne James (Jim); grandchildren, Wayne Watt (Amy), Jennifer David (John) and Todd James (Sarah Thompson); great-grandchildren, Hudson and Holland James; and brother, Max Waugh (Jane).
He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Vivian Dagenhart Short, Pansy Waugh Mills and Christine Waugh.
A visitation will be held Thursday, April 2 from 6 - 8:00 p.m. with funeral services on Friday, April 3 at 11:00 a.m., all at Monticello United Methodist Church , 308 Island Ford Road in Statesville. Pallbearers will be Wayne Watt, John David, Dean Mills, Samuel Mills, Seth Mills and Joshua Gantt.
In lieu of flowers, his family encourages you to make a donation to MUMC; Marvin United Methodist, 671 Marvin Church Court, Stony Point, NC 28678 or Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
