Robert Ray Moore, 88, of Statesville, North Carolina, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, following a lengthy illness.
Bob was born on February 18, 1938, in Appalachia, Virginia, to the late Robert Franklin Moore and Georgia Margaret Rowland Moore. He received his elementary and high school education in his hometown before attending Virginia Tech, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1960. While at Virginia Tech, Bob participated in the ROTC program, which led to his service in the United States Army. He served two years at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.
Bob began his professional career with Riegelwood Paper Company in 1963. He later joined Mead Paper in 1965, working first in Kingsport, Tennessee, and then in Escanaba, Michigan. In 1975, he transitioned into the paper machine industry, beginning with Cheney Bigelow in Weaverville, North Carolina, before joining KRC in Salisbury, North Carolina, in 1980.
Bob had a lifelong love of music. He especially enjoyed jazz and played in a jazz combo during his military service. He also loved gospel music and sang baritone with a quartet while living in Ashe County.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Gay Powers Moore; four sons, Steven Moore (Shelby), Daniel Moore (Susan), Robert Moore (Mechelle), and Curtis Moore (Esther); grandchildren, Starla Pike, Erin Morrow and Connor Moore; six great-grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; and his brother, Jerry Randal Moore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sharon Lee Moore.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Fairview Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Hill officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Fairview Baptist Church or Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County.
Arrangements for Mr. Moore are in the care of Troutman Funeral Home.
