Dr. Robert Meredith Hall, 88, of Cleveland, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025. Fondly known as "Meredith" to family and close friends he leaves behind a legacy of wisdom and humor as well as a dedication to the field of psychology. A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, he will be cherished by all those who knew him and to all whose lives he touched.
Born on August 6, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Hall was the son of the late William Wallace Hall and Hazel Rice Hall. His family later moved to Brownsville, Texas, where he graduated from Brownsville High School in 1955. There, his sharp intellect and gift for communication shone brightly on the debate team where he excelled, and it was also where he developed his fluency in Spanish- skills that would serve him throughout his life and professional career. Dr. Hall earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas, a master's in Richmond, Virginia, and later completed his Ph. D at the Professional Institute of College Park, University of Maryland, where he remained on staff there for two years before embarking on an accomplished career as a clinical psychologist. He served at the Austin State Hospital and the North Carolina Veterans Hospital in Salisbury, later consulting at Davidson College and maintaining a private practice. An educator at heart, he was also an instructor at the Catawba College School of Psychology, inspiring many to pursue compassionate and evidence-based care. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Specialties as well as a member of the American College of Forensic Examiners.
For the past 34 years, Dr. Hall shared a loving life with his wife, Susan Sims Hall, at their home, Darshana Hall Plantation- a historic property that they painstakingly restored and preserved. Together, they delighted in travel (Europe, Charleston, SC, Hilton Head, SC, St. Simons, GA...), antiquing and companionship of their cherished dogs (mastiffs, dobermans and exceptional rescues) that brought them so much joy over the years. Dr. Hall had many interests and collections not limited to but included an extensive pipe collection as well as a keen interest in the acquisition of specialized cars. He especially enjoyed being a member of the Confusion Club and attending the weekly meetings at the Statesville Country Club. Most recently in retirement Dr. Hall has gotten a chance to spend time with his beloved daughter Desirree Hall Plummer and her husband Robert Plummer. His great grandchildren lovingly refer to him as "Big Daddy". His gentle presence and lively spirit will be deeply missed.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother William “Bill” Wallace.
In addition to his wife of 34 years, Susan Sims Hall, Dr. Hall is survived by family as follows: Daughter: Desirree Hall Plummer & her husband Robert Plummer, Grandchildren: Melanie & Jake Taylor Great-grandchildren: Jamie Thompson, Daisy Thompson and Zoe Thompson.
