Oct. 17, 1922 - Dec. 10, 2012
Norma Irene Dickens Sherrill, 90, died peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on December 10, 2012, from complications of dementia. She was born on October 17, 1922, in High Point to Ida Davis Dickens and Robert James Dickens. She attended Troutman schools, graduating in 1939 tied for salutatorian (losing to the valedictorian by less than a point, a fact she never forgot). She met her husband of 71 years, Clark Sherrill, during a class play, and they married in 1940. After Clark's WWII Navy Seabee service, the couple had two children, Sherry in 1947 and Sydney in 1952. Norma worked in bookkeeping and retail sales at a variety of businesses in several N.C. towns. She was an excellent bridge player, an adept crossword puzzle solver, and a wonderful Southern cook. Norma is survived by her husband, Clark, of Winston-Salem; daughter, Sherry Sherrill (Carolyn Schneider) of Winston-Salem; daughter, Sydney Gingrow of Greensboro; and love-of-her-life granddaughter, Alex Gingrow (Michael Scoggins) of Brooklyn, NY. Also surviving are siblings, Ruth Pittman (John, Jr.), Ken Dickens (Rachel), and Bob Dickens (Loretta); and sisters-in-law, Betty Sherrill and Patty Wilson (R.J.). A host of Dickens and Sherrill nieces and nephews also survives. Brothers, Wallace Dickens and Charles Dickens; and sister, Wanda Dickens Phelps, preceded her in death. A visitation for Norma will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012, from 2-4 p.m. at Troutman Funeral Home, 345 N. Main Street, Troutman, NC 28166. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials to Norma may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family thanks the many staff who served Norma through her illness, including those at Regency Care, Danby House, and especially those at KBR Hospice Home.Visits: 1
