Martha Irene (Plyler) Johnston

Martha Irene Plyler Sherrill Johnston, 87 of Conover, (previously of Statesville) passed away Monday, March 20, 2023, at Abernathy Laurels in Conover.

Mrs. Johnston was born in Iredell County, June 22, 1935, the daughter of the late Nathan Plyler and Mary Ratledge Plyler.  She was a graduate of Troutman High School and made her career as a customer service representative with Southern Bell.  Martha was a lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church, but upon moving to Abernathy Laurels she became affiliated with Conover United Methodist Church.

Along with her parents Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her first husband, Bobby Ray Sherrill, and her second husband, Roy Tuttle Johnston.

Those left to cherish Martha’s memory include her son, Bobby Vance Sherrill and wife Kimberley Chambers Sherrill, her brother James Plyler, and her sister Sarah Adams.

A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Johnston’s life will be conducted at 10:00 am, Friday, March 24, 2023, at Troutman Funeral Home Chapel, Charmagne VanRooyen will officiate.  The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 9:00-10:00 am.  Burial will follow the funeral service at Iredell Memorial Gardens in Statesville.

In lieu of flowers those wishing to make memorials are asked to consider Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.  Active pallbearers will include Jamie Plyler, Jim Williams, Sam Williams, Billy Adams, Tim Chambers, and Daniel Holloway.

The family extends sincere thanks to the nursing staff at Abernathy Laurels for their exceptional care of Martha.
