Sue was born on June 12, 1950, in Iredell County to Thomas Shumaker and Annie Bell Brown Shumaker. Sue was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Jerry Wayne Hepler; her parents; a brother, Carroll Dean Shumaker; two brothers-in-law, Tommy Davis and Kenneth Hepler; and two nephews, Kim Harper and Marty Lewis.
Surviving are her daughter, Gina Hepler Kemp (Clifford) of North Wilkesboro; son, Joel Wayne Hepler of Union Grove; three cherished grandsons, Max Kemp of North Wilkesboro, and McKinley and Carson Hepler, of Union Grove.
She is further survived by three siblings, Meralyn Harper (Tommy), Edward Shumaker (Helen), and Mildred “Millie” Shumaker Howard (Danny); two sisters-in-law, Peggy Davis and Carolyn Lewis (Junior); and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was in the first graduating class of North Iredell High School. She also attended Mitchell Community College for a degree in food service management. For 13 years, she worked as a cafeteria manager at numerous Iredell County high schools and elementary schools. She sold insurance for a short stint before she began managing the Pink Tea Room at Iredell Memorial Hospital, where she worked 18 years. She was extremely proud of her work there and enjoyed feeding visitors and staff. It also afforded her the ability to pamper her friends and family when they were in the hospital.
Sue was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro where through the years she served in many positions from teacher to church clerk.
A special thank you to the caregivers that served her in the past six months, especially Ashley Gray and Stephanie Church who provided excellent care during this extremely difficult time.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. A visitation will be prior to the service from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County for their compassionate care over the past few years. Memorial donations can be made to the S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House, 1325 Mecklenburg Highway, Mooresville, NC 28115, and to Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, 11730 Statesville Highway, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
