Margaret Gernell (Payne) Carter

Margaret Gernell Payne Carter, 97, of Statesville, went to her rest Friday, November 5, 2021.

Mrs. Carter was born September 3, 1924 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Lonnie Pinkney Payne and Sadie Austin Payne. She attended Iredell County schools and was married to the late Lawrence Carter. She worked for K Mart for over 30 years. She was founding member of the Wild Goose Patchwork Club and a member of the Oakdale Club. She co-owned the Shop Creative Clutter with Virginia Beaver and later the Country Couple with her spouse. She was a lifelong member of Abilene Church of Christ, where she was a soldier for the Lord and taught Sunday School for many years

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Josey; one son, Dennis Carter (Joan); 11 grandchildren, Penny Carter Moore (Ray), Larry Lawrence Carter, James Albert Josey, Jr., Melissa Carter Beaver, Cassandra Josey Troutman (Stephen), Ned Scott Carter (Tammy), Angela Marie Carter, Samantha Dale Pendergrass, Commie Lawrence Pendergrass (Collette), Rikki Leigh Carter and Joshua Payne Carter, 12 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Larry Carter; one daughter, Judith Pendergrass, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral service will be held 3:00pm Monday, November 8, 2021 at Abilene Church of Christ with Minister Dave Olson officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
