Lucy Cartner

July 9, 1930 — December 3, 2015

July 9, 1930 - Dec. 3, 2015 On Thursday, December 3, 2015, Lucy Benfield Cartner went Home to be with the Lord Jesus after a lengthy illness. Her last days were spent at Gordon’s Hospice House, where she was treated with much love and care. She is survived by a daughter, Sandy, of the home and sons, Danny and wife, Denise, of Statesville, and Rick Shook and wife, Gabie, also of Statesville. She was born on July 9, 1930 to Frank Houpe and Ina Weatherman, both of which died by the time she was 3 years old. She and her brother Bill (deceased) were lovingly adopted by Lawson Taylor Benfield and Mary Ann Carrigan Benfield in 1933. She enjoyed a career in the nursing field, in which she spent time working in the emergency room, nursery, as a Surgical Technician, nurse’s assistant, and home health nurse. She took great care of the patients she cared for and in the end, the nurses and staff at Gordon’s took great care of her. So, in a sense, it came full circle. A Special thanks to all those there. Lucy met the Lord Jesus when she was a young woman at New Bethany Baptist Church and she very much enjoyed the fellowship of other Believers at Fellowship Baptist Church in recent years. She also enjoyed going to Saturday Night Real Life at Monticello UMC a few years ago. She was an avid NASCAR fan and had a wonderful time when she got to meet "her boy" Ryan Newman a few years ago. Two sons, John Calvin Shook Jr. (wife, Alice Shook) and Jerry Allen Shook are both deceased. Also surviving Ms. Cartner are grandchildren, Cindy Truax and husband, Charlie, Tammy Shook, Betsy Swift, Genie Johnston, Kim Stinnett and Ricky Cartner. Also one niece, Sue Benfield Taylor and husband, Johnny, and Evelyn Marlowe, her cousin, who was a dear friend for life. There will be a time of visitation for the family at Fellowship Baptist Church on 2306 Buffalo Shoals Rd. at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 6 followed by a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m with the Rev. Beau Mills officiating. A private burial will be held on Monday, December 7 at 1:00 p. m. at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers. the family requests that memorials be made to Gordon’s Hospice House of Statesville.
