Mr. Lenwood Earl Berry, 78, of Troutman, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011 at Gordon Hospice House. Earl was born in Graniteville, SC on October 5, 1932 to the late Ruby Hancock Berry and Theron O’Bryant Berry. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was happily married to Doris Butler Berry until her passing in 1981. Earl was employed by Johnson Motor Lines until their closing in 1980 and retired from Consolidated Freight in 1987, enjoying his young retirement with many pastimes including his dedicated service to the Masons and the Shriners. He served as Captain of the Statesville Two-Wheelers, an ancillary unit of the Shriners, and took special pride in riding in parades and many fundraising events for the Shriners Hospital for crippled and burned children. He was a veteran who served our country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He loved life and lived life abiding by the Golden Rule and his Christian faith. Earl will always be remembered for his beautiful smile, his humanitarian spirit and a heart filled with love for his family. Those left to treasure his memory include his three children, Michael A. Berry and wife, Sandy, of Aiken, SC, Karen B. Clodfelter and husband, Gerald, of Troutman, and Brian K. Berry and wife, Kimberly, of Denver; seven grandchildren, Toni Hewitt and husband, Dylan, Allyson Benton and husband, Roy, Nicole Harper, Casey Clodfelter and wife, Gretchin, Candice Clontz and husband, Brian, Dylan and Brandi Berry; eleven great-grandchildren, Zack, Jacob, Landon, Sydney and Madeline Hewitt, McKenzie and Mason Clontz, Aubrey Clodfelter, Layla and Liston Benton; and two half sisters, Paula B. England and Alice Carolyn Berry, both of Birmingham, AL. There are many others whom his life touched at Heritage Place Adult Living Center and Gordon Hospice House and he had a precious host of friends including the Huntersville "Hardees" bunch and his best friend of many years, Jean Wolfe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jesse B. Harris. Celebration of life services for Lenwood Earl Berry will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Mountain Road Baptist Church, Compton Park Rd in Statesville with the Rev. Jamie Fox officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, April 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Graniteville Memorial Cemetery in Graniteville, SC where Masonic graveside rites will be delivered by the Star Lodge of Graniteville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mountain Road Baptist Church, Shriners Hospitals for Children or Gordon Hospice House.
