Lenwell Wade Massey, 92, of Statesville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the Gordon Hospice House.
Lynn was born on March 22, 1934, in Iredell County and was the son of the late David Watson Massey and Nellie Wilson Massey. He was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School, attended North Carolina State University, and proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church of Statesville where he loved singing in the choir.
In 1957, Lynn married Annette Padgett Massey, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage until her passing in 2009.
Lynn enjoyed a long and varied career. He worked as a draftsman for Kewaunee Industries for many years, then with Gilbert Engineering before joining the Paul N. Howard & Company when he had the unique opportunity to work on a construction project along the Nile River in Egypt, an experience he and Annette immensely enjoyed. After returning home he worked with Blanton & Moore. Once retired, he was able to work with his long-time friend, Bill Henderson at Bill Henderson Auto Group.
He was a volunteer fireman with the Trinity Volunteer Fire Department and a longstanding member of the Duck Creek Gun Club. He was a former Lions Club member and enjoyed traveling, time at the beach, NASCAR and most all sports especially golf and tennis.
Those left to cherish his memory include his two daughters, Tammy Neely and husband Bill of Statesville, and Tina Lawhon and husband Stan of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a granddaughter, Dr. Tess Lawhon and husband Ryan Johnson of Charleston, SC; and one brother, Wayne Massey and wife Joann of Statesville. He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Peggy Padgett King and her husband Larry of Statesville along with a number of cherished nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Lynn was preceded in death by one brother, J.W. Massey and his wife Doris Ann Massey.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Lynn’s loving caregivers, Melinda Hayes, Darlene Brown, Annalou Jehle, Angie Miller, Tawanna Coward, Beverly Kennon and Patricia Lemon. Also, very appreciative for the kindness and exceptional care extended by everyone at The Gordon Hospice House.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Trinity Methodist Church of Statesville with Rev. Frank “Moose” Horvath officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the church fellowship hall. A private Interment service will be held at a later date.
