Lathern “Pete” Sloan Honeycutt, 92, of Statesville, passed away, August 10, 2024, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Pete was born February 22, 1932, in Mooresville and was the son of the late Andrew Jessie Honeycutt and Della Freeze Honeycutt. He attended schools in Troutman and enlisted in the US Navy on April 5, 1951, where he served in the Korean War on the USS Owen DD536 until March 14, 1955. While being in the US Navy, he received Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal (2 stars), United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal and 50-year Medal.
On November 10, 1956, he married the late Barbara Christopher Honeycutt, who passed away March 3, 2020. From June 1955-November 1957, he and his brother, Gene Honeycutt had a station from V Point to the Gulf Station on Main Street in Troutman. In 1964 he bought his brother out and in the late 1960’s he bought the station from Gulf. After 46 years, he retired in 1997.
From 1955 to 1991 he worked for the Troutman Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief for 26 years (1965-1991) and was Fireman of the Year in 1981. He also was a member of Troutman Baptist Church since he was saved and baptized in 1969. He worked in the Sunday School office every Sunday for many years. He loved to play golf, playing once or twice a week. He also worked at Fox Den in Troutman for many years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by two children, Teresa H. McCurdy (Rodney), Traci Honeycutt; two grandchildren, Isaac McCurdy (Katie), Anna Crouch (Daryl); three great grandchildren, Sarah McCurdy, Brantley McCurdy, Piper Crouch and several cousins.
In addition to his wife and parents, Pete was preceded in death by four siblings, Margaret Neel, Dot Brown, Kathleen Siebert and Gene Honeycutt.
Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Friday, August 16, 2024, at Troutman Baptist Church with Rev. John Stevenson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00-2:00pm at Troutman Baptist Church. He will lie in state at Troutman Funeral Home on Thursday from 12:00-5:00pm.
