John Watson “J.W.” Massey, 91, beloved husband, father and pawpaw went to his heavenly home Monday, May 2, 2022, at his son’s home in Emerald Isle.
J.W. was born in Statesville, NC and was the son of the late David Watson Massey and Nellie Wilson Massey. He was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School, Mitchell College and Lenoir Rhyne University. An Army veteran, he was stationed with the fifth army headquarters in Chicago, IL. Upon return to Statesville, J.W. joined Dixie Seating Co. as president. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. He was a member of the Monticello Lions Club. Through the United Way he worked with kidney dialysis transportation.
In addition to his parents, J.W. was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ann Miller Massey and sister-in-law, Annette Massey.
J.W. is survived by his son, Gary Massey (Sandi), daughter, Lisa McCurdy (Tony), grandchildren, Chris Giles (Angie), John David Massey, Bradley McCurdy (Jacob), Brooke Fike (Ryan) and great grandchildren, Evan Giles, Keegan Giles and Emersyn Fike. Also surviving are his brothers, Lynn Massey and Wayne Massey (Joann) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service will be held 1:00 pm, Wednesday, May 11 at Trinity United Methodist Church with rev. Mike Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the conclusion of the services.
