Johnny Lee Smith, Jr., 79, of Statesville, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Cabarrus Hospital.

Johnny was born July 6, 1946, to the late Johnny Lee Smith, Sr. and Jacqueline Elmina Rumple Smith. His specialty was auto painting and body work. He opened his own body shop, JMT Enterprises. He was also employed at Lowe’s Home Improvement, up to retirement. He enjoyed restoring older model cars after retiring.

Johnny’s passion for shag dancing led him to open Shaker’s Beach Bar & Boogie, where he was the house DJ. Soon after, he founded Statesville Shag Club. He was a DJ for several local shag clubs. He currently was a member of Lake Hickory Shag Club.

Left to cherish his memory is his former wife, Cheryl Tucker.

In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Elaine Bumgarner, and his brother, Jesse Duffy Smith.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Iredell Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Rev. John Parks officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM at Troutman Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Troutman Funeral Home is serving the Smith family.
