Joe Shumake

June 27, 1956 — April 7, 2016

June 27, 1956 - Apr. 7, 2016 Joe Carlton Shumake, 59, of Troutman, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born on June 27, 1956 in Iredell County to the late Willis Watson and Julia Ostwalt Shumake. In 1979, Julia and her son, Joe, began serving traditional southern cuisine food at their restaurant, Julia’s Talley House, in Troutman. They wanted to serve people good food at reasonable prices and, needless to say, they developed a loyal following over the years. Joe dedicated his entire career to making the restaurant successful and, in doing so, established a dedicated staff who he considered both friends and family. Daily, Joe could be seen helping those in need in the Troutman area by providing them with food from the restaurant and he always credited his faith, beliefs and devoted staff for their success. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Kim Swicegood Shumake; son, Jason D. Shumake; daughters, Lindsey Shumake (Ben) Henkel, Samantha Shumake (Daniel) Johnson and Olivia G. Shumake; sisters, Paulette (Stanley) Klein and Krista Leonard; brother, Jerry Shumake; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman with the Rev. Jeff Spry of Western Avenue Baptist Church in Statesville officiating. The family would like to invite family and friends to Julia’s Talley House immediately following the service to honor Joe and his family and their dedication to serving the people of Troutman and surrounding communities. The family will hold a private graveside service in Iredell Memorial Gardens prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers for the service will be Joe's son and right hand man Jason Shumake, Chris Shumake, Jake Klein, Donnie Ostwalt, Billy Swicegood, Jeffery Robinson, David Waddell and Eric Clodfelter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Troutman HELP Ministries Lunch Box Program, P. O. Box 151, Troutman, NC 28166. "We cannot imagine life without Joe. There are no words to describe what a wonderful man he was and how greatly he will be missed by all who knew him."
