Joan Donna Pope Lail, 73, of Cedar Lane, Troutman, died Thursday, August 12, 2010, at her home, following an extended illness. Joan was born May 2, 1937, in Iredell County, daughter of the late Glenn Rufus Pope and Connie Hicks Pope. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Cynthia P. McDougald. Joan was a graduate of Troutman High School and Mitchell College. On July 14, 1956, she married her high school sweetheart, Bobby Rhyne Lail. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Phillip R. Lail (Beth) of Statesville, J. Scott Lail (Jenny) of Kernersville, and J. Brian Lail (Sandy) of Statesville; three grandsons, Jonathan, Sammy, and Jacob Lail; three granddaughters, Caroline, Elizabeth, and Ashley Lail; one brother, Larry H. Pope (Soula); one sister, Glenda P. Murdock; a number of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces; and special friends. For more than 30 years, she worked as a sales representative for Wheeling Corrugated (Lane Enterprises). After her retirement, Joan volunteered by delivering meals for HELP Ministries of Troutman. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Joan enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling, and spending time at the family’s mountain cabin in Virginia. She also went on yearly trips to the beach with a close group of high school friends. A lifelong member of New Perth A.R.P. Church in Troutman, Joan joined the choir when she was 12 years old. She was also a devoted member of the Westminster Sunday School class and the Glory Girls, a women’s outreach group at the church. Visitation will be held at Troutman Funeral Home on Sunday, August 15, from 6-8 p.m. A private burial service will be conducted on Monday at 10 a.m. at New Perth Cemetery, followed by a celebration of her life at New Perth A.R.P. Church, 204 E. West Ave., at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Will Anderson, Rev. Robert Sherer, and Rev. Nathan McCall officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Lail, Sammy Lail, Jacob Lail, David Brown, Dwight Fraver, and Keith Reavis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Westminster Sunday School class and the Glory Girls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Perth A.R.P. Church, 204 E. West Ave., Troutman, NC 28166; HELP Ministries of Troutman, P.O. Box 151, Troutman, NC 28166; or Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625.
