Helen Lois Brown, 96, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at The Sharon at SouthPark in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Helen was born on April 20, 1930, in Troutman, North Carolina, to the late Leon Atwood Brown Sr. and Laura Rebecca Kerr Brown. She graduated from Erskine College in 1950 and later earned her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education.
Helen devoted her professional life to education as an elementary school teacher with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. During her long career, she made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students. She also spent two years teaching at military bases in France and Germany, extending her influence beyond her home community.
Faith was an important part of Helen’s life. While living in Troutman, she was a member of New Perth Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. After moving to Charlotte, she joined Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor Kerr Brown McCain (Paul), and her brothers, Leon Atwood Brown Jr. (Sue) and James Franklin Brown (Sarah Ruth).
She is survived by her nieces, Eleanor Grier McCain Payne (Welby), Denise Brown Rix (Rob), Celia Brown Mitchell, and Patricia Brown Reavis (Phillip); her nephews, James Ross McCain (Cathy), Leon A. Brown III (Lisa), and Alan Brown; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at New Perth ARP Cemetery with Rev. Dan Hazen officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any of the following: Erskine College, Giving - Erskine College, or to New Perth ARP Church, 204 West Ave W, Troutman, NC 28166, or to Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Supporting MPPC - Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
