Fred “David” Sherrill, 83, of Statesville, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 26, 2025, at Gordon Hospice House surrounded by his family.
David was born on September 29, 1942, to the late Fred Washington Sherrill and Mary “Peck” Morrow Sherrill.
He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18 and proudly served his country for the next 20 years, achieving the rank of Major before his honorable retirement in 1981.
A proud Vietnam War veteran, David earned several medals including the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Vietnam Service Silver Star.
Through a distinguished Army career as a helicopter pilot and instructor, he received several awards including three Army Commendation Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, a Parachutist Badge, a Senior Army Aviator Badge, the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Valorous Unit Award, and a Presidential Unit Citation.
After retiring from the Army, David continued his commitment to service in his community, teaching ROTC at North Iredell High School and was a member of the Rolling Thunder. He was also the co-owner of Lakewood Golf Course for 25 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Suzanne Hutchcraft; son, Steve Sherrill (Sara); grandchildren, Riley Hutchcraft and Tanner Sherrill; and his special friend, Allison Holloway.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dale Sherrill and his sister, Diane Mason.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Troutman Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Dale officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. A private burial will follow at a later date at Salisbury National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in David’s honor to your favorite veteran’s group or local American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
