Evelyn Ong Siew-Choo Cheek, age 70, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Gordon Hospice House from complications of heart disease and severe diabetes.
Evelyn was born on September 24, 1955, in Penang. She was the daughter of the late Khoo Phaik Poh and the late Ong Eng Chong.
She married Basil Cheek on December 7, 1985, and became a United States citizen in 1992. From a young age, Evelyn dreamed of living in the United States and worked hard to build a life for her family. After the passing of her husband in 1997, she lovingly devoted herself to raising her daughter. Evelyn was a devoted mother and grandmother who deeply loved her family, and they loved her dearly in return. She enjoyed gardening, collecting stamps and coins, cooking, shopping for QVC and HSN products, and reading.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Basil Cheek; and her oldest brother, Ong Boon Leong.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Gigey Cheek Wilcox, and son-in-law, Randy Wilcox, both of Statesville; her grandchildren, Colt Williams, Andromeda Cheek, and Athena Wilcox; and her step-granddaughter, Annie Wilcox.
She is also survived by her brothers in Malaysia, Ong Boon Haw, Ong Lay Chye, and Ong Lay Huat; her sisters, Ong Siew Guat and Ong Siew Lan; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 22 in the Troutman Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. John Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Iredell Memorial Park. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Adam Jones, Dr. Naveed Rajper, and the staff of Gordon Hospice House for their kindness, compassion, and exceptional care given to Evelyn.
A special thank you is also extended to all of Evelyn’s dear friends for the love, support, kindness, and friendship they shared with her throughout her life. Your presence and care meant so much to her and to the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Evelyn’s memory to the charity of your choice supporting diabetes research or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“Forever loved, always remembered.”
Arrangements for Mrs. Cheek are in the care of Troutman Funeral Home.
