Eleanor (Mattie) (Matteson) Meech

Statesville

Eleanor (Mattie) Matteson Meech, 95, died in Statesville, NC, on March 12, 2019.  She was born in Adrian, Michigan, to John and Eleanor Tuttle Matteson.

Mattie graduated from the University of Michigan (1945) and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Mattie then attended and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in New York, NY, (1945). She worked for General Motors Corporation in Detroit, MI, from 1945-47. She married Paul Collins Meech in August 1947, who preceded her in death (2002).

Mattie and Paul moved to Statesville in 1954 where Paul worked for Kewaunee Manufacturing Company.  They joined the First Presbyterian Church after moving to Statesville and were lifelong members of the church.  Mattie was an avid supporter of the United Way, Fifth Street Ministries, Mitchell College Foundation, Hospice of Iredell County, the Boys and Girls Clubs, Iredell County museums, Salvation Army, Ft. Dobbs, and Friends of the Library.

Mattie is survived by her son David (Cary, NC); son Paul Jr. and wife Carol Sue (Athens, GA) and their two sons, Britt of Brooklyn, NY and Brad (and wife Vera) of Athens, GA, and son Mark and wife Debbie (Apex, NC) and their six children, Heather  of Raleigh, NC; Melissa (and husband Jeremiah and four children – Allison, Caleb, Olivia, and Evan) of Holly Springs, NC; Jessica (and husband Alec and two sons – Luke and Logan) of Holly Springs, NC;  April (and husband Chris) of Raleigh, NC;  Kelsey of Apex, NC;  and Scott of Apex, NC.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Gordon Hospice House for their compassionate care.  Many thanks also to Brea Sherrill and all of the wonderful caregivers from A Day’s Labor:  Connie Daye, Davina Smith, Jenoa Colborne, Julie Riffe, Lori Riddle, Kenda Smith, and Savanna Teague for giving Mattie such loving care these last few years.

A private memorial service will be held for the family at the Oakwood Cemetery gravesite.   Memorials should be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Statesville organ fund or to the charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.troutmanfuneralhome.com
