Jan. 16, 1935 - July 25, 2015
Edith Miller Gregory, 80, of Statesville, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.
Edith was born on January 16, 1935 to the late Henry Wilburn Miller and Sarah Bessie Cartner Miller.
The youngest of ten children, Edith was born in Rowan County where the family lived until they moved to Statesville when she was 12. She graduated from Statesville Senior High School and attended Mitchell College.
Around that time, she met the man she would marry, Glenn Gregory. Edith and Glenn wed in 1953 and had two sons, Blaine and Scott. She was devoted to Glenn, her sons and extended family.
Edith worked as a secretary at Keewaunee Technical Scientific Corporation and also at Davis Hospital and the Brian Center Nursing Care facility.
Her passion was fine arts including music, art and the finer things of life. She was a church organist for many years playing regularly and part time at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Paul's Lutheran Church as well as other churches. Her home was decorated and furnished with family heirlooms, antiques and artwork including her own. In fair-weather months, she enjoyed sitting in her sunroom and watching birds, especially blue birds and hummingbirds.
Edith cared for others by sacrificing her desires and wishes, always putting others before herself. She was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman where she and Glenn were members for more than 50 years. At Holy Trinity, she was a Circle Member and sang for many years with the choir.
In their retirement, Edith and Glenn doted on and helped care for their grandchildren. They also spent time at the mountain house they built in Boone and grew a large garden every year, the spoils of which Edith canned and prepared in meals she shared with family and friends. She was a devoted correspondent with many, never missing a special date.
Edith was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Glenn Arthur Gregory. She is survived by her sons, Charles Blaine Gregory and wife, Gail Kerr, of Charlotte and Glenn Scott Gregory of Mooresville; and four grandchildren, Sara, Emily, Laura and Matthew. In addition, she is survived by her loving and close sister, Audrey Shoemaker.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Mary Beam, Mamie Setzer, Fred Miller, Darr Miller, Quinten Niblock, Charles Miller, Kathleen Moore and Byron "Bob" Miller.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29th at Troutman Funeral Home.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, July 30th at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman with the Rev. Dieter W. Punt officiating. Immediately following the service, she will be laid to rest in St. Martin's Cemetery on Wallace Springs Road in Statesville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625 or the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Building Improvement Fund, P. O. Box 308, Troutman, NC 28166.
