Our most loved husband, father and friend, Don G. Clendenin, was born February 14, 1948, and transitioned from this life to his heavenly home Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Don graduated from Cool Spring School. He chose to further his education by enrolling in Mitchell College, where he graduated in 1968. After graduating, he continued his education by enrolling in Roger Williams College in Bristol, RI. Don graduated in 1973 with a BA in Education. He taught elementary school for several years. During this time, Don also enlisted in the United States Army Reserve and served from 1970-1976.
Don was the Shipping/Receiving Manager for Bernhardt Furniture, Athens Furniture and Armstrong Wood Floors for 32 years. This achievement aptly describes Don’s work ethic during his career. He always challenged and inspired others to be their best. Don used his business acumen to acquire and manage multiple rental apartments and houses which he continued to manage after he retired.
Don was a giver. His generosity and compassion were demonstrated by giving of himself and his time to his community and church. He was a member of Noon Civitan Club, the Landlord Association, and Meals on Wheels for New Salem Methodist Church, where he was a member. He also loved to sing in the choir.
Don was a protector. In December of 1991, Don received the distinguished Citizen Honor from the Statesville Mayor, among a number of other recognitions for his courage. Don walked into a business and saw a woman being stabbed by an assailant in her workplace. The assailant then stabbed him in the neck, attempting to kill him after Don interfered to protect her. Don saved her life.
Don loved to travel. His favorite spots were the beach, mountains and Cape Cod. Don also loved riding his bike with his son and grandsons, as well as going to support their sports events.
Don loved deeply and he cherished his relationships with friends and family. He will be deeply missed and remembered for his love of life, family, people and music. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Pamela Guay Clendenin; one son, Mark Blair Clendenin; and two grandchildren, Graham and Cooper Clendenin. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Memorial Service celebrating Don Clendenin’s life will be held at New Salem United Methodist Church, 155 New Salem Road, Statesville, on Saturday, June 20, 2026. The family will be receiving friends from 9:00 am until 10:00 am, with the memorial service beginning at 10:00 am. We invite all who knew and loved Don to join us in celebrating his life and honoring the man he was.
Flowers are welcome, but we also encourage you to donate to your favorite charity.
