Clyde Rockwell “Bud” Hoke, 87 passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at his home.
The son of Clyde and Mary Salome Shoemaker Hoke Bud was born February 20, 1936 in Statesville, NC. In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by a son, William Clyde “Bill” Hoke, two sisters, Rachel Ann Hoke, and Fleta Hoke Laws, two brothers, John Nolan Hoke and Thomas Edward Hoke, sister-in-law Ruby Burrell Hoke and brothers-in-law, Rayford Laws, Lonnie Drye, Bill Ray Holland, John William “Billy” Harrell, Donald Lee “Don” Harrell and James Robert “Jim” Harrell.
Bud was married in 1956 to Barbara Alice Harrell at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, being the first couple married there. Upon their return to Statesville, they rejoined the church, and Bud was active in the Men’s Group, the Chicken Pie Group, served on several committees, and was a member of the Seekers Sunday school class.
Bud was self employed for many years, starting in his high school years working after school for his father in the septic tank business. He worked in sales for Iredell Memorial Park. After moving to Lincolnton, he worked for Farm Bureau Insurance Company, Softplay Playground Equipment, and later formed Hoke Sign Company with his son, Charley. He was a man of many talents and had a patent for a sod cutter he designed.
Bud loved music of all kinds and played the harmonica, guitar, and other string instruments.
He and Barbara loved square dancing and were members of the Lincoln Squares in Lincolnton and later the Emerald Squares in Hiddenite. They enjoyed visiting clubs in the area, the state convention, and traveling. Bud was active in the Statesville Senior Center, served on the advisory board Council and various committees.
He was active in the Iredell Senior Games and the North Carolina Senior Games.
After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2013, he was active in the local support and exercise group.
Survivors include his wife Barbara, sons Rocky (Pam) Hoke of Statesville, Charley (Susan) Hoke of Gamewell, Steve Hoke of Winston Salem, daughter-in-law Teresa S. Hoke of Statesville, grandchildren, Josh (Kelly) Hoke, Katie H. (Bryon) Smallwood, Evan Hoke, Jesse Hoke, David Hoke, James Hoke, Samantha Hoke, and Joseph Cooper, great-grandsons, William “Will” Josey and Elijah “Eli” Smallwood. He is further survived by his brothers, Robert (Becky) Hoke, and Gary Hoke, sisters, Marlene H. Miller, Martha H. Drye, Judy H. Holland and Libby (Connie) H. Branch.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. The family will greet friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Those wishing to make memorials are asked to consider Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, the Parkinson’s Association, the Council on Aging, Iredell Senior Games, West Iredell Ruritan Club, or Hospice of Iredell County.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff at Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, especially Paige, Jacquetta, Chelsea and Lynn.
