Brenda Renegar Martin, 82, of Statesville, died Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House.
She was born in a log house in Davie County on Saturday, January 30, 1943, to the late Perry Odell and Inez Smith Renegar. Odell Renegar passed away in 1952, and Inez Renegar passed away 1997.
On September 16, 1967, Brenda married James (Jim) Quince Martin. They were married nearly 48 years when Jim passed away on July 17, 2015.
Brenda was an honor graduate in the class of 1961 from Davie High School. She graduated from the Davis Hospital School of Nursing in the class of 1964, ranking first in her class academically and clinical nursing practice. She attended Mitchell College, transferring course credits to Pfeiffer College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1972. She had an advanced certification in General Nursing Practice from the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).
She became a registered nurse in the fall of 1964 and held an active nursing license for 50 years. She spent her entire nursing career of 48 years at Davis Hospital, now Davis Regional Medical Center.
Growing up, Brenda was instilled with a strong faith in God from her family and the Baptist church. On Easter Sunday, April 6, 1980, Brenda and her family joined Beulah Baptist Church.
Brenda felt her claim to fame was having a recipe for a coffee cake aired on the Betty Feezor TV program in 1974.
Brenda and Jim had two sons who survive, Brent James Martin (Stacy) of Fort Mill, SC, and Kevin Ryan Martin (Samantha) of Raleigh, NC.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Madison Elizabeth Martin, of Fort Mill, SC, Kelli Marie Martin, of Chapel Hill, NC and Jackson Ryan Martin, of Raleigh, NC.; and step-grandchildren, Ansley Crandall, (Tyler and son, Henry) of Columbia, SC and Walker Ard (Aimee, and daughter, Saige) of Sumter, SC; and sister, Alice Renegar Dwiggins.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Odell Renegar, who died in 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, September 28 at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Burgess officiating. Burial will follow in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Beulah Baptist Church, 1851 Old Mountain Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
