Betty Johnson Godfrey, 92, of Statesville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, NC.
Born on July 7, 1933, in Iredell County, Betty was the daughter of the late Earnest Gordon and Mable Brown Johnson. She was a graduate of Scotts High School and continued her education at Mitchell College in Statesville. A lifelong and devoted member of New Sterling ARP Church, Betty faithfully served her church family by singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and participating in the Women of the Church.
On July 4, 1969, she married Bobby Gene Godfrey, who preceded her in death on March 17, 2003. Betty dedicated 20 years of service as a Personnel Secretary at Kewaunee Scientific Corporation and was also associated with Bernhardt Industries during her working career. She was an active member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA).
Betty was a long-time cancer survivor who fought a courageous 23-year battle with grace and strength, inspiring all who knew her.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepson, Bobby Steven Godfrey, and her two brothers, W. Glenn Johnson and wife, Elena, and Leo P. Johnson and wife, Dora.
Left to cherish her memory are her niece, Karen King Graves; stepdaughter, Sharon Godfrey Sipes; Kimberly King Ehaze; great-nephew, Vince Johnson and wife, Liz; great-niece, Mandy Johnson; a dear and special friend, Elizabeth Hutchins, for her dedicated love to Betty.
She is further survived by stepdaughter, Susan Heath; step-granddaughters, Lindsay Heath, Haley Heath and Jackie Sipes.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, at New Sterling ARP Church, officiated by Rev. Boone McAuley and Rev. Dr. Earl Linderman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends in the Family Life Center following the burial service.
