Peggy Jean Dunn Byers, 68, of Statesville, passed away peacefully from pancreatic cancer on March 13, 2010, at the Gordon Hospice House of Iredell County. Peggy was born in Charlotte on Feb. 27, 1942, to Hazel Kidd Dunn and the late Wilton A. Dunn. She was a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, class of 1960. She retired from Uniwood, a division of International Paper Company, in 2001, after 30 years of service. Peggy has been a devoted member of Mountain Road Baptist Church since 1970, where she faithfully served as Women’s Mission Union Director, Baptist Women's President, Acteen Leader, Vacation Bible School Director and Assistant Pianist. She was also president of the Florence Josey Mission Group. She served on the church building committee and participated in church mission trips. She most recently served as Church Clerk and Sunday School teacher for the adult women’s class. Peggy also served the community for the last eight years as the coordinator of Adopt-A-School Ministry for Celeste Henkel School. Peggy is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jack D. Byers, of Statesville; her daughter, Pamela Byers Kramer and husband Jeff; and three grandchildren, William, Sydney and Benjamin, all of Charleston, S.C. Also surviving is her mother, Hazel Kidd Dunn, of Charlotte; three sisters and their husbands, Carolyn Elliotte (Mike) of Mint Hill, Joyce Norris (Frank) of Charlotte and Kathy McKee (Jerry) of China Grove. A service to celebrate Peggy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Mountain Road Baptist Church, 132 Compton Park Road in Statesville with the Rev. Jamie Fox officiating. Interment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Troutman Funeral Home. At other times, the family will assemble at 119 Red Barn Lane in Statesville. Pallbearers will be Bobby Gilleland, Jimmy Troutman, Charles Brown, Ray Furr, Dan Boggs and Wayne Cline.
