Mrs. Jewell Gilleland Brown, 84, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born October 26, 1926, the daughter of the late Jesse Wyatt and Flora Padgett Gilleland. She attended Statesville schools and Mitchell College and graduated with Honors from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She retired from the Iredell-Statesville Schools system, having taught at Troutman Elementary School and Mount Mourne Elementary School where she was selected as "Teacher of the Year." She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman where she served as Choir Director, Sunday School teacher of the Fidelis Bible Class, President of the Women of the Church, Circle chairperson and as a member of the Church Council. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Iredell Concert Association, was the first "Miss Statesville" and was the 1947 Mitchell College "May Queen." Left to cherish her memory are her son, Phil Brown and wife, Jane, of Troutman; her daughter, Libby Brown of Winston-Salem and Troutman; her grandchildren, William Brown, Claire Brown, Matt Maynard and Kate Maynard Brandis and husband, Darwin; and one great grandchild, Quayde Brandis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Philip Brown; an infant son, Fletcher Wyatt Brown; and her sister, Wilma Nell Gilleland Cashion. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 17th at Troutman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 18th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman with the Rev. Matthew L. Miller and Vicar Diane Bowker officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Troutman. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O.
